The Mithraeum was a secret underground cellar or cavern dedicated to the worship of Mithras. The caverns were usually ten to twelve meters long and four to six meters wide. This was to represent the original cavern where Mithras was born from a rock. The ritual of the slaying of a bull and washing in the blood were also performed in these hidden places. There are about fifty Mithraeum preserved in Rome to this day, a strange and mysterious connection to an all but forgotten God. |
